[Image] Thank You, Henry Hyde.
Now Please Burn in Hell.
The internet has to be stopped. Suddenly people
that didn't know about each other can do
something like the '24 Hours of Democracy'
project and a then they know about each other.
They can send email, plans, work out ideas for
resistance. They can devise new economic models
that don't rely on the distribution methods of
the bosses. They can go into business over the
net with virtually no capital.
Anyone, even illegal aliens, could make money
over the net if they figure out a way. Can't
fine somebody $10,000 a day for buying something
from an illegal alien over the net. There's no
way to know he's undesirable, you can't see his
skin. Anybody can do whatever they want.
The net can't be shut down. It's as useful for
them as it is for us. Can't really restrict what
people do. It's too popular. Hell, no one even
knows what's being done. We need to get a handle
on this thing and we need to get some tools in
place before it gets out of hand. Look what
happened when we decided we need to be able to
tap a zillion telephones. The cost of
retrofitting the installed base of digital
switches really slowed down the project. Gotta
think ahead.
Porno. Lots of kiddie porn on the net. No? Well,
we'll just say it's there. Then we'll outlaw it.
Then we can put in the infrastructure to start
to control what people do. No one will stand up
for kiddie porn, everyone hates that. It will
work.
Don't believe it, huh?
Henry Hyde did us all a favor when he inserted
the abortion amendment into the Decency Act.
Without that, it would have been a matter of
speculation. We wouldn't know what censorship is
all about. But now we do. Now we know that, as
soon as they decided to restrict freedom of
speech on the net, the first zealot down the
block thought they should restrict speech about
ideas he opposes.
I figure that, in addition to abortion, talking
about assisted suicide is obscene, or at least
indecent (you wouldn't want the kids to know
about that). Also, talk about women earning as
much as men, well, that's obviously obscene (you
couldn't have the discussion without observing
that PMS is not a legitimate reason to pay
someone less, and PMS is really just a
discussion of a woman's reproductive functions).
What else? Well anything really, all you need to
do is pass the law.
Sounds silly to me. Fortunately, Henry Hyde
tipped their hand and we know how silly they
really are. The really silly thing is that they
have the guns and the prisons.
We better stop this forcefully and soon.
(Of course, if I said "fuck," then this essay
would be illegal, too.)
